Silver Cord

The Silver Cord program recognizes students who commit to the community by engaging in volunteer service. Students must perform 160 hours of volunteer service over the course of the four years of high school in order to be recognized at graduation. Students can begin accumulating hours after the completion of eighth grade. In order to receive credit for volunteer service performed, students will be required to document all activities using the electronic Silver Cord submission form.

Volunteer service activities that provide a service or meet a clear need for non-profit agencies, religious organizations, schools, parks, senior living communities, or community organizations will be accepted. Volunteer service must be performed for an agency; working for a relative or friend, or work for which compensation is received will not be credited.

Non-acceptable activities would include sports team managing, service work expected as part of the membership obligation, participating in a fundraiser (danceathon, sleepathon, etc.). Silver Cord hours may not directly involve the rituals, services, or ceremonies of any specific religion, e.g., singing in the choir, altar service, or reading religious texts. Court mandated service cannot be counted toward Silver Cord hours. If there is any doubt about whether an activity will count toward the Silver Cord hours, please see the school counselor or principal.

We instill a lifelong love of learning and promote the achievement of the individual within a positive learning climate. At Springville expectations are cooperatively set by school personnel, students, families, and the community.
